I CAME, I SAW, I TURNED AROUND

The title of the photobook "I Came, I Saw, I turned around” is a play on the “Veni, vidi, vici '' Julius Caesar quote “Veni, vidi, vici”, which can be translated to "I Came, I Saw, I Conquered".

The book is a retrospective project that tries to make sense of the complexity of fitting in, at home and abroad.

A deep dive into my personal archive, the book is be an attempt to show the journey of life seen through the eyes of a person from

Greenland.

From the Arctic to the desert, in the concrete jungle and out at sea. Impressions of places and encounters with people tell the tale of resilience, in a world that is largely Eurocentric in which values and traditions that make up diversity are being replaced with Western culture.

Real-life people and manifestations of feelings morph into one as a means of expressing how it feels to navigate through life, coming from a remote town in the Arctic and being exposed to the reality of those who were lost in the making of the world we live in.

While working on the book, I have had in my heart and mind all the lives lost to the struggle of cultural displacement.

Greenland has the highest suicide rate per capita in the world, and throughout my life, I have witnessed attempts, I have witnessed friends getting the news of suicide and I have received such news.

With the book I hope to spark a healthy debate on issues like suicide, post-colonial relations/identity and bring awareness to the consequences of being culturally displaced.
